Metallic thread (gold and silver thread) adds a luxurious and華やか finish to machine embroidery, but

at the same time, metallic thread (gold and silver thread) can be difficult to handle.

Here are the causes and countermeasures for gold and silver thread breaking during machine embroidery.

1. Damage due to friction

Metallic thread is made by spirally twisting an extremely thin metallized film or similar material around a core thread.

If the machine speed is too fast, the thread may break due to friction heat.

【Countermeasure】Reduce the machine speed

Simply sewing slower than usual embroidery can suppress friction heat and reduce thread breakage.

2. Thread "snarling"

When thread is pulled from industrial-sized cone spools, the thread itself can experience significant "twisting."

This twisting can catch on the guide (thread path), causing momentary stress and breakage.

【Countermeasure】We recommend using a "snarl prevention attachment" and "thread unraveling prevention net."

Reduce snarling by using a snarl prevention attachment.

Cover the thread with a thread unraveling prevention net and apply appropriate tension. This also prevents thread from unraveling.

First, try moving the machine and thread a little further apart and creating a guide (thread path) so that the thread is pulled "straight up," as this may naturally resolve the twisting.

3. Friction with the needle eye

With common size 11 or 14 needles, the needle eye may be too small for metallic thread. Forcing the thread through a narrow eye can cause the film to peel off, leading to thread breakage.

Always use the correct needle size for the thread thickness!

It is essential to use embroidery thread that reduces friction with the appropriate needle size.

If the thread breaks, try a needle one size thicker.
